Small, and close to the work.

Elvet is built by a small team working directly with the lawyers who will use it. Every decision about what the product extracts, what it refuses to guess at, and what it escalates to a person comes from watching that work rather than from a category definition.

The position

Legal software has spent two years promising answers. The failure mode is familiar: a confident paragraph, no source, and a lawyer who has to redo the work to find out whether it was right. That is not a saving.

Elvet is built on the opposite bet — that the valuable thing is a firm's own documents, made findable and connected, with every claim traceable to the words that support it. The system retrieves and organises. Judgement stays with the person who is accountable for it.

Where it runs

The product is deployed per firm, and designed so that a firm which cannot let documents leave its own infrastructure gets the same system rather than a cut-down one. That constraint shaped the architecture from the start; it is not a later edition.
